Maintain Your Crochet Material 1

Yeye wool is the most popular wool we used to create crochet crafts and projects. But how do you maintain your crochet material? How do you take care of the yeye wool to make the material last for you?

I had a crochet project, a personal one. I had finished the work and due to the way, I handled the material while making it, I needed to wash it at the end of the work.

I washed it in the morning and by evening, it was still damp. I had to bring it into my house.

By the next morning, it had developed a foul smell and even after spreading it out to dry well, the smell didn’t go out.

To prevent your crochet yarn from developing a foul smell due to dampness, follow these steps for better washing and drying practices:

For Washing:

  1. Use a mild soap not detergent. Avoid harsh chemicals that can weaken the fibres of the wool.
  2. Hand-wash the yarn to prevent damage. Do not use washing machine for it.
  3. Rinse thoroughly; twice or thrice. Ensure all the soap residue is thoroughly rinsed out to prevent residue that can hold moisture and cause odour.
  4. Use cool water to wash, not warm or hot water.

When Drying:

  1. After washing, squeeze out the water by gently pressing it.
  2. Another way is to use a towel wrapped around the material to further get the excess water out.
  3. Spread out in the open air, on a rack, preferably in a shade and not direct sunlight as it can cause fading of the yarn colour.
  4. If you must bring it indoors, use a fan to keep the air around it in motion, speeding up the drying process, and prevent odour.
  5. You can also use a dehumidifier in the drying area to reduce moisture in the air around the fabric.

Preventive Measures:

  1. Spread your wet material as early as possible to maximize daylight and air flow.
  2. At midday, check what you spread out and flip over where necessary, reposition, rotate, or fluff to expose all parts of the material to air and speed up the drying process.

During Storage:

  1. Ensure your material is completely dried.
  2. Your storage spaces should be cool and dry. Store yarn in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and humidity.
  3. Your storage spaces should allow air to pass through them. They should not be airtight. Keep your material in spaces or containers that has a meshy border and cover to allow air circulation.

I hope this has helped you in preventing foul odour on your crochet materials and maintain its quality.
